Mae A. D’Agostino
is a 1977 magna cum laude graduate of Siena College in
Loudonville, NY. After graduating from College, Mae attended Syracuse
University College of Law, receiving her juris doctor degree in
May of 1980. At Syracuse University College of Law, Mae was awarded
the International Academy of Trial Lawyers award for distinguished
achievement in the art and science of advocacy. She was a member
of the 1979 National Mock Trial Team that captured the United States
Championship in a trial presided over by the Honorable Leon Jaworski.
In addition to her numerous Mock Trial activities in law school,
Mae was a teaching assistant in the legal writing and research department.
After graduating
from Law School, Mae began her career as a trial attorney. She has
tried scores of personal injury cases in all areas of Tort Law including
but not limited to medical malpractice, products liability, negligence,
work place accidents, and civil assault. Mae was one of the first
attorneys in the Northern District of New York to actually try to
conclusion a case involving the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In January
of 1989, Mae received the Young Lawyer Award presented by the Insurance
Negligence and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar
Association for her outstanding contribution to the practice of
law in the field of Insurance. She has also received the Daniel
H. Mahoney Memorial Award presented annually by the Capital District
Trial Lawyers Association for outstanding commitment and service
to client, bar and profession.
In 1992, Mae
organized an unprecedented attempt in Albany County to settle cases.
For her efforts, she received the President’s Award from the
Albany County Bar Association in recognition of her commitment to
settlement week. During settlement week in Albany County, the Courts
were actually closed for one full week while every case on the calendar
was assigned to a seasoned attorney for purposes of settlement.
Settlement week was a resounding success. Many cases were settled
to the satisfaction of both plaintiffs and defendants.
Mae is a past
chair of the Trial Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association
and in 2003 was inducted into both the International Academy of
Trial Lawyers which limits its membership to approximately 500 American
attorneys and the American College of Trial Lawyers, another selective
professional society.
In addition
to her career, Mae has been very active in the legal community and
in the community at large. For several years she coached fifth and
sixth grade girls basketball at a local elementary school; she served
as a coach for the Albany Law School Trial Team for ten years. She
has volunteered on a number occasions to speak to students who are
considering careers in the legal field and last year presented a
Mock Trial for third graders at a local public school to better
enable them to understand the civil justice system.
Mae has participated
in numerous Continuing Legal Education programs and continues to
freely give of her time to educate other attorneys. She is an Adjunct
Professor at Albany Law School where she teaches Trial Tactics and
Medical Malpractice. She is a member of the Siena College Board
of Trustees and the Board of Visitors at Syracuse University College
of Law. She is also a member of the New York State Continuing Legal
Education Board, the New York State and Albany County Bar Associations
as well as the Capital District Woman’s Bar Association.
